Learn What to Pack for an October Family Disneyland Trip

October is an amazing time to visit Disneyland. With fall decorations, Halloween Time events, and (a little bit) cooler weather, it’s magical. But with unpredictable weather, you may be wondering what to pack for Disneyland in October. I learned this the hard way when I made fun of my mom for packing ponchos during an October trip—only for us to get caught in a Disneyland downpour (the crazy kind where the path into ToonTown floods). Those ponchos saved us. (Thanks Mom!)

So, I’m here to help you pack smarter and avoid the same mistake. Keep reading to learn what to pack for Disneyland in October to keep your family dry, comfortable, and ready for all the magic.

Layers for changing temperatures

In October, mornings and evenings can be chilly (50s-60s °F), but midday temperatures can climb to the mid-70s. Layering is essential. Don’t forget a lightweight jacket or sweatshirt for the mornings and evenings (especially if you’re staying for fireworks), and a t-shirt for the afternoon.

If you’re not planning to take a stroller (perfect for carrying your extra layers), I recommend getting a locker, so you don’t have to pack around extra layers all day.

Rain gear

Remember that October downpour I mentioned? It was so intense the park closed early that night. And did I mention that it was in the mid 80’s that day and we were all wearing shorts and t-shirts? Bring ponchos to keep things dry – they take up almost no space and can help cover people, backpacks, strollers, etc. You can also sit on them if seats in the park are wet.

If the forecast actually calls for rain, you may also want a rain cover for the stroller, water-resistant shoes (I like to just wear my sandals, since it’s not usually cold), and a compact umbrella.

Halloween costumes or themed outfits

October is extra special at Disneyland because of Halloween-themed events like Oogie Boogie Bash and seasonal decor. If you’re attending Ooogie Boogie Bash (lucky you!) make sure you bring comfortable costumes for your family. This is the only time adults are allowed to wear costumes in the park, so have fun with it!

If you aren’t going to Oogie Boogie, it’s still fun to Disneybound (dress up in outfits inspired by Disney characters) or get some fall-themed Disney shirts.

Sun protection – yes, even in October

The sun can still be intense, especially in the afternoon. Don’t forget your sunscreen, hats and sunglasses. A stroller fan also helped keep our baby cool during afternoon naps in the stroller.
