Are you planning your very first trip to Disneyland (or your first visit in years) and already feeling overwhelmed by hotels, park tickets, transportation, park hoppers—and now something called Lightning Lane Multi Pass?!
You’re not alone—I was right there too, staring at my spreadsheets, and investing hours in trying to understand the details, so my family would have a magical trip (because who wants to spend this much on a family vacation and not maximize every minute…) It’s a lot, especially if you’re the one planning (and packing) for the whole family. But I promise, once you understand how Lightning Lane works, it can totally transform your day in the parks—and I’m here to help you get there!
The first time I went to the parks with Disneyland’s Lightning Lane Multi Pass, I had a ton of questions too:
- Do we really need this? Or can I just get it for one day and save some money?
- How does it work with kids in tow?
- Is it confusing once you’re in the park? Will I spend my whole trip glued to my phone and miss the magic?
After learning the ins and outs and using it myself, I created an easy, printable guide to help other moms and first-time visitors understand how to use Lightning Lane Multi Pass without stress (Disney travel agents also buy my guide to share with their travel clients!) This post shares my top tips—plus a few bonus tools to help your whole trip run as smooth as possible!
What Is Lightning Lane Multi Pass?
The Lightning Lane Multi Pass is Disneyland’s paid line-skipping system. It lets you skip the standby line on select rides by reserving a return time in the Disneyland app.
There are two types:
- Multi Pass: Covers a range of popular attractions
- Single Pass: Sold individually for the biggest headliners like Rise of the Resistance and Radiator Springs Racers
You use them in the Disneyland app throughout your park day. But if you’re a parent juggling snacks, strollers, and ride schedules, it can be a lot to manage in the moment – that’s where my tips come in – keep reading!
Do You Really Need Lightning Lane Multi Pass?
Here’s the honest answer: It depends on your goals. You probably don’t need it every day, but it can make a big difference. I suggest it if:
- You’re visiting on a busy weekend or holiday
- You want to fit a lot into one park day
- You have little ones (or adults!) who don’t do well waiting in long lines
I’m pretty sure we will never go to Disneyland withou it again. We skip so much wasted time – to us, saving even 15 minutes in line per ride is worth it. And my son loves nothing more than skipping through the Big Thunder Mountain queue, past all the people who don’t have LLMP. We ride more, meltdown less, and get to enjoy afternoon break at the pool while stacking Lightning Lanes to use later (more on that in a minute!)
Pro Tip: Work it into your budget everyday, and if you absolutely can’t, plan your itinerary so you get it on your most ride-heavy day, and save shows/parades for a day without it.
How Do You Buy It?
You can add Lightning Lane Multi Pass:
- When you purchase your Disneyland tickets (as long as you plan to have it for every day of your trip)
- Or in the Disneyland app after you scan into the park
You can’t book rides until you’ve entered the park, so don’t worry about setting alarms or waking up early—just get ready to purchase it in the app as soon as you’ve scanned your ticket at the gate.
How Do You Use Lightning Lane Multi Pass?
It works like this:
- Scan into the park
- Open the Disneyland app and book your first ride
- Book your next Lightning Lane either:
- After you scan into your most recent ride, or
- 2 hours after you booked your last ride
- Repeat throughout the day!
All the booking and management happens inside the app—but I created a printable Lightning Lane Guide that walks you through it all step-by-step. (Because let’s be real, the last thing you want is to be fumbling through your phone while your kids are pulling you toward Peter Pan.)

7 Tips to Make Lightning Lane Work for Your Family
1. Book High-Demand Rides First
As soon as you enter the park, go for rides that usually run out of Lightning Lane return times early—like Space Mountain, Indiana Jones, or Toy Story Midway Mania.
Not sure what’s high-demand or how fast things book up? My guide includes a cheat sheet with top priority picks for both parks.
2. Stack Rides in the Afternoon
Lines are longest mid-day/early evening, so I like to stack Lightning Lanes for the afternoon. We usually knock out a bunch of standby rides at rope drop (when the park opens) in the morning, then utilize our Lightning Lanes later when the crowds really pick up.
3. Know When to Book Again
You can book your next Lightning Lane either:
- 2 hours after your last reservation
OR - Right after you scan into your most-recently-booked Lightning Lane
That means you don’t have to constantly wait—you can keep moving and booking new rides as you go. I like to set an alarm in my phone for my next booking window so I don’t miss it.
4. Don’t Miss the Single Pass Rides
The most popular rides—like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Radiator Springs Racers—aren’t included in Multi Pass. These need to be purchased separately as Single Lightning Lanes in the app, and they do sell out.
If your kids (or partner!) have their hearts set on these, it’s worth budgeting for. Otherwise, you can wait in line but you may spend 1-2 hours waiting, so you have to decide if that’s worth it.
Pro Tip: These rides both go down often. If you linger in the area when the ride is down, and can jump in line when it comes back up, you’ll have a shorter wait!
5. One Person Should Be in Charge
I’ve found it’s easiest to designate one person to manage this for the group. I’d pick the most Type-A person (hi, that’s me!) Whoever is booking Lightning Lanes should have everyone’s tickets added in their app. That way, they can select all tickets and book the same Lightning Lane return times for everyone in the group.
Pro Tip: Make sure everyone has scanned into the park before you book the first ride, otherwise they won’t all be selected, and you won’t have the same return times!
Not sure how to do that? My Disneyland App Printable Guide includes screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

6. Modify, Don’t Cancel
If you want to change your Lightning Lane return time, never cancel your reservation—doing that resets your booking window and delays when you can make your next one. Instead, use the “Modify” option in the app to adjust the time or even switch to a different ride.
Don’t see a better time right away? Refresh the app frequently—times can change fast as other guests modify their plans too.
Pro Tip: As you modify, try to stack your Lightning Lanes in the same area. For example, book Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Space Mountain, and Autopia back-to-back to avoid zig-zagging across the park and wearing out little legs (and grown-up ones, too!).
7. Save Something for Nighttime Magic
One of my favorite things is saving a fun Lightning Lane for later in the evening—like Big Thunder Mountain at sunset or Haunted Mansion after dark. It makes the end of your day feel just as magical as the beginning.
Pro Tip: Ride these popular rides at the beginning of the day when lines are short, and then use your Lightning Lane at night so you can do them twice!
Make the Reveal & Countdown Magical!
I also have some fun countdowns and trip reveals available! Build excitement at home with:
- Custom printable tickets to surprise them with a trip – for their birthday, during Halloween, to enjoy the Christmas season and more!
- Coloring page countdowns for kids
- Dry-erase printables so they can cross off the days
